Lyon

The Rhône-Alpes region is France’s second most important economic region, representing 10% of its GDP and 12% of its industrial employment. It is also the second region in France for research, development and innovation, producing 10% of scientific publications, 16% of patents and hosting more than 600 research labs.

Rhône-Alpes is a leader in fields with strong links to synchrotron science: micro- and nano-technologies, life sciences, materials science, textile and polymers, high-tech chemistry and renewable energies.

Lyon, the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region, is a friendly city of human dimensions with 2.6 million inhabitants in the Greater Lyon area, at the crossroads of southern and northern Europe.

On the banks of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is a major European and international traffic hub, with its international airport, Lyon Saint-Exupéry, handling close to 8 million passengers per year. 14,300 hotel rooms (including apartment hotels) in all categories provide suitable accommodation for all requirements, at prices well below those in larger cities, and with generous discounts in the summer months.

Paris and SOLEIL are just two hours away by high-speed train, and the ESRF just over one hour by the motorway.

Other major European light sources can be visited within a day thanks to direct flight connections: DESY (Germany), DIAMOND (UK), SLS (Switzerland), Maxlab (Sweden) and ALBA (Spain).
